OUR SERVICES

The process of metal casting involves both science and art.

Put simply, a replica of the item to be cast is made, usually from wood. This ‘pattern’ is placed in a sand-filled box to create a ‘mould’ and later removed. Molten metal is poured into the mould to hold its shape as it solidifies. Depending on the casting produced, excess material may need to be removed in a process termed ‘machining’.

Some metal castings have internal structures and can’t be produced from patterns alone. In these cases, a ‘core’, which is an inverse of the internal features, is made by baking sand with resin. It stays in the mould while the metal is being poured and is removed after the casting has solidified.

For castings that require a high level of accuracy, shell mould casting may be an option. Key differences from sand moulding are that patterns are usually metal and moulds are made of resin-covered sand.

Design and
pattern-making

Supply your own pattern, or let our in-house pattern-maker create a one to suit your needs. We can work from pre-existing technical drawings or assist with the design process.

We store many patterns on site to make ordering a fast, simple process. All we need to know are details of the pattern, material in which it's to be cast and the quantity required.

General machining

Most metal castings don't require machining, but for those that do, we outsource the process to local, experienced professionals.

Sand casting and
shell-mould casting

We specialise in both sand casting and shell mould casting, and can produce items weighing from 1kg to 350kg. Simply choose from the following metals:

  • aluminium (401, 601)

  • aluminium bronze (AB1, AB2)

  • copper magnesium aluminium (CMA1)

  • gunmetal (G1), leaded gunmetal (LG1, LG2)

  • cast iron, spheroidal graphite (SG) iron

  • leaded tin bronze (LB1, LB2)

  • phosphor bronze (PB1, PB2, PB3)

  • stainless steel.
